Curtain Trim Fragment - First Class Stateroom
This piece of floral fabric was used to trim curtains in Titanic's first class staterooms. Two patterns were designed specifically for the ship - floral and fruit. The curtains would have been switched after each leg of the journey to keep the staterooms looking clean and fresh. After the sinking of the Titanic, the remaning curtains could not be used on another ship due to superstition and negative press, so the White Star Line promptly auctioned off their remaining stock. This piece comes from the home of an elderly woman whose mother attended the White Star Line auction in 1912.
Many thanks to Kevin Saucier of titanicitems.com for helping me expand the provenance on this piece, and for letting me use images of his full curtain and alternate fruit trim. Please click on the small thumbnails above to view more of his impressive collection of Titanic fabrics.
